Gold, Absinthe Masters 2011

Enigma Verte is an outstanding, unfiltered premium absinthe made from a combination of aromatic herbs and plants, including grande and petite wormwood, anise, fennel and hyssop. It uses a grape-base alcohol and is bottled at 72°, in order to hold its natural green colour and present its aromas to the fullest. Made by following the distillery's own technique of distilling each plant separately, blending the resulting full alcohol distillates and then finishing with an 'esprit vert' ('green spirit' - a natural maceration of additional plants in grape spirits, including veronica, a.k.a.'speedwell' - adding tea-like aromas) which is mixed in during the final colouring stage of production. It louches beautifully, and is complex and intense. Sure to please those who are searching for a spicy, yet traditional absinthe. It represents one of the best quality/cost values in modern traditional absinthes.

"This is a pale olive green. Intense, with that dustiness, but also chamomile tea, fennel. The louche is slow and mysterious, the green fairy awakening, out comes sage, Japanese green tea, and angelica. Complex, yet elusive. Things are slightly floaty, but it’s hard to say if it is the alcohol or the fairy at work." David Broom, Spectator, November 2009

Quantity:

50cl 65% abv (130 proof)

Winner of Gold Medal and Best in Class at the 2008 International Wine and Spirits Competition

Doubs Mystique "Carte d'or" is a superb ultra-premium absinthe distilled in century old alambics in Pontarlier, in the heart of the Doubs region of eastern France, the historical home of absinthe.
It's a modern absinthe, to please the modern palate, although one that pays homage to the recipes and methods of the past. No other modern absinthe has as extensive a herb bill - the secret of Mystique's richness, smoothness and remarkable complexity of aroma and flavour.

All the herbs - including of course the grande absinthe - that could be sourced from the Pontarlier region were sourced locally. Enormous effort was expended on herb selection, and preparation. The youngest distillations in the final blend are at least 6 months old, the oldest more than a year old, and this balance will be maintained in future production.

Esquire Magazine August 2008 'Man His Best' section, article "The Outlaw", written by spirits specialist David Wondrich: "Marylin Manson not only has impeccable taste in women, he's a fine judge of absinthe, too - as this, made in Switzerland to his taste, demonstrates."

The official absinthe of Marilyn Manson. It is distilled from fine herbs, naturally coloured and not pre-sugared, this absinthe should delight even the fastidious absintheur and Marilyn Manson fan – the protagonist loves it and has played a significant part in the product development.

70cl 68% abv (136 proof)

Jade Absinthe Nouvelle-Orléans presents the connoisseur with a perfume and texture that disappeared along with the artisanal marques almost a century ago. Several medicinal plants and flowers, including wormwood are macerated in a wine-based alcohol and then distilled in 100 year old alambics. Its light green colour comes from a second infusion of plants in the resulting distillate. Its aromas are bright yet complex and savory; it is a true apéritif, one that stimulates the appetite while cleansing and refreshing the palate with its crisp, rich taste. The finish is long and fresh, with its attractive floral components lingering long after the last sip.

Jade VS 1898 is based on an original C. F. Berger absinthe first created in Switzerland in 1830 which became so popular in France that another distillery was opened in Marseille in 1874. 'Swiss-style' absinthes (a term used to describe the manufacturing technique and not necessarily the origin) became the standard for quality, so much so that French distilleries often used the term 'Suisse' to designate their finest absinthes and virtually all French absinthes carried a Swiss cross on their labels.

Batch #2 - Distilled October 2008

An LDF world exclusive, the second version is still batch-distilled in small quantities by the Italian absintheur Stefano Rossoni at Distilleria Alpe in the beautiful Valle d'Aosta, near the French border.

This absinthe is made according to the most classic and authentic protocols, and great effort has been put into the herb selection: the floral and dry Italian wormwood comes from Piemonte, grown in the same fields that supply the best vermouth brands, while the other herbs come from a private farmer in Emilia Romagna who focuses on obtaining the finest qualities by growing botanicals in a natural enviroment and without pesticides.

L'Italienne follows the feminine and floral style absinthes, of which the most famous historic brand was Premier Fils. Its maker feels the lower anise profile allows the complex and subtle floral bouquet to be more fully appreciated. It's quite certainly the most floral absinthe on the market: L’Italienne greets the nose with warm honeysuckle notes, sweet anise and hyssop; the taste is dry, very perfumed and complex, and accents the aroma with floral wormwood, lavender and powerful Italian fennel in the front.

Batch #2 also shows improvement in louche and mouth-feel from the first release, even though the anise content is unchanged. A very slow ice-water drip is recommended to fully appreciate this delicate absinthe.

Absinthe Montmartre is traditionally distilled using classic plant ingredients found in historic absinthes: wormwood, green anise, Florence fennel, the exotic spiciness of coriander, along with creaminess enhanced by the atypical addition of licorice root. More exotic choices include the highly aromatic angelica, the warm, pleasant spiciness of cinnamon, and finally, a 'zesting' in the distillation of orange and citrus peel. It is naturally colored after distillation with the traditional ingredients; petite wormwood, hyssop, melissa, with the addition of a touch of bright mint. It is finished at a traditional 65% alcohol, to preserve and present this unusual and delicious combination of ingredients at their best. It has an attractive green color and slow-forming louche, which reflects its excellent craftsmanship.
